Welcome to Women Podcasters in Solidarity!
I’m Julie Neale, a mom to two boys (5 and 13), a life and leadership coach, founder of Mother’s Quest and the Mother’s Quest Podcast and a white woman of privilege stepping into activism and advocacy with positive intent, a desire to listen and to learn, and willingness to make mistakes.
After a series of conversations with my friend Jenjii Hysten over the last year about what it is like for her as a black mother raising two black boys, and witnessing haunting videos (one of Philando Castile’s girlfriend Diamond Phillips and her daughter in the back of a police car after his death and the other of black parents having the “talk” with their children about what to do if stopped by police), I decided I could no longer stay safe and silent and I needed to do something. I also realized that as a podcaster I could use my platform to raise awareness, dollars, and my own understanding to make a difference.
The Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative was born after I realized that if I could make this commitment, perhaps other women podcasters would as well. Sure enough, as I began inviting others to participate, more and more women said “yes!” The first to say “yes” was my friend, fellow podcaster, and promotions extraordinaire Cristin Downs, of the Notable Woman, who has since agreed to publicize the impact of our collective efforts.
I envision this as a twice-yearly, ongoing initiative for social justice with the first focus being on Anti-Racism and the Movement for Black Lives. If you pledge to be involved, you would commit to doing a podcast episode on this subject between September and mid-November. There are additional optional pledges you can make which include making a donation and inviting listeners to contribute to a related cause (in time for Giving Tuesday in November) and talking to the children in your life about these issues in a developmentally appropriate way.
Along the way, we’ll share our episodes with one another and our communities. In December, we’ll assemble stories, a list of what was accomplished with links to all our episodes and we’ll share our collective impact. We’ll also learn and grow in our awareness and connection together.
In saying “Yes” to this Initiative, you say “Yes” to:
- The transformational impact of podcasting beyond dollars or downloads
- Courageous conversations about social justice
- Risking imperfection and stepping to the edge of our own personal growth and learning
- Inviting our listeners and community into new areas of awareness and impact themselves
- The belief that the perspective, voice, humanity and power of women is needed now more than ever more
I hope that you will say “Yes” and sign up below to join the Initiative.
